Underworld Movie Review: A Perfect Fall Escape

Discover why Fall became my favorite season after moving from Florida to North Carolina. Featuring a review of the Underworld movie series and a look at embracing Halloween traditions.

Seasons come and seasons go, but Fall will always be my favorite.

If you had asked me years ago, I would have told you I was a “Summer Girl” through and through. Growing up in Florida, summer was my paradise—endless beach days, lake parties, and sunshine. Being a Florida native meant life was mostly hot, warm, or slightly cool, but always a never-ending summer.

That all changed when I moved to North Carolina. For the first time, I experienced the seasons changing slowly. My heart filled with a new sense of hope and wonder.

Embracing the “Forbidden” Fun

Growing up in a conservative Christian home, the only Fall holiday we really celebrated was Thanksgiving. To be honest, until recently, Thanksgiving was actually my least favorite holiday! We didn’t do Halloween—no costumes, no candy, and definitely no “scary” movies.

Experiencing all those “forbidden” things as a young adult has been so much fun. I used to wonder, “How old is too old to join in these festivities?” I quickly learned the answer: You are never too old. Now, I get to see that magic through the eyes of my son, my nieces, and my nephews. My heart is full of the time I get to cherish with them.

My Fall Watch List: Diving into the Underworld

To kick off the season, I always make a list of books and movies that fit the autumn “vibe.” First on my list this year is the Underworld series. These films are packed with vampires, werewolves (Lycans), hybrids, and magic—exactly what I missed out on as a kid!

Underworld: A Review

The movie opens in a way that perfectly sets the mood. There is falling rain, the deep darkness of night, and an ancient rivalry. You quickly realize you’re being pulled into an epic secret world that humans aren’t invited to.

At its core, it’s a beautiful, “off-kilter” love story. It is between the vampire “Death Dealer,” Selene, and Michael. He is a human on the verge of becoming a hybrid. As I watched, I couldn’t help but wonder: What if this secret world actually existed right alongside our own? It is unknown to those of us who live in the daylight.

What I Loved:

  • The Aesthetic: The darkness, heavy rain, and shadowy cityscapes are stunning.
  • The Action: The fight scenes are beautifully choreographed—almost like watching a dark ballet. There is a strange beauty in the shadows.
  • The Escapism: It’s pure, atmospheric fun.

Is Underworld the best movie ever made? No. But is it a blast to watch on a rainy October night? Absolutely.
