My Thoughts on Star Wars: Revenge Of The Sith
As a lifelong Star Wars fan, I have always found Revenge of the Sith to resonate with me deeply. It holds a dark place in my heart. It has always affected me deeply. It is also very compelling. After watching The Phantom Menace, I had little wish to spend time watching Attack Of The Clones. My lack of interest extended to the third installment of the series. 15 years later I decided it was time to finish the series. I started the movie Revenge of the Sith with very low expectations. Surprisingly, I found it wonderful. George Lucas really outdid himself. Through this movie my love of Star Wars was renewed.
From the opening shot, you’re thrust right into the chaos of the Clone Wars. (My husband who is a Star Wars fanatic kept mentioning that I should watch The Clone Wars series first. From what I’ve been told it really enhances the viewing of this movie. ) It instantly sets a high-stakes tone, and you can feel the desperation and the losing of hope of the Republic. The tension building around Anakin Skywalker really stood out. I kept hold my breath, hoping, and wishing that he would find peace within himself. Longing for a different outcome. All the while knowing his true fate.
Hayden Christensen’s performance as Anakin was truly amazing. You really see the internal conflict in him. His arrogance, fear, and love slowly remove the light within him. This creates a darkness that will follow him for the rest of his life. His interactions with Padmé are heartbreaking, especially knowing their tragic end. And Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan was phenomenal. His portrayal of a loyal friend and master, slowly realizing the horror of what Anakin is becoming, is truly powerful. The scene where he confronts Anakin on Mustafar is the emotional center of the entire film. The raw pain and betrayal in his voice when he says, “You were my brother, Anakin! I loved you!” still gives me chills. Tears filled my eyes feeling his pain.
The action sequences are top-notch. The duel between Yoda and Palpatine in the Senate chamber is visually stunning. It is a great demonstration of their respective powers. But nothing compares to the epic clash on Mustafar. The volcanic backdrop, the intensity of the fight, the sheer desperation.
Of course, the film isn’t without its flaws. Some of the dialogue still feels a forced and unnatural, particularly in the more romantic scenes. I will say though that the dialogue has improved greatly over the trilogy.
What makes Revenge of the Sith a true standout is its commitment to the tragedy. It doesn’t shy away from the darkness. We witness the fall of the Jedi. We see the rise of the Empire. Anakin completely transforms into Darth Vader. The final montage shows the birth of the twins. It also shows Obi-Wan delivering Luke to Tatooine and Yoda going into exile. This sequence is a necessary conclusion. It sets the stage perfectly for A New Hope.
In my opinion, Revenge of the Sith is the strongest film in the prequel trilogy. It’s dark, dramatic, and delivers the emotional punch that the story demanded. I will revisit this film often. It captivates me not just for the action. It’s also for the profound tragedy of a hero’s fall and the birth of a galaxy’s darkest hour.
